The National Staff Training Group (NSTG)
Historically, NSTG has aimed to act as a focus for information and knowledge on issues relevant to the continuous professional development of Road Safety Officers (RSOs).
However, the modern road safety professional is not necessarily a traditional Road Safety Officer; the modern practitioner being much more multi-faceted. Therefore, the focus must shift to a wider audience of practitioners.
The recently revived group and first NSTG meeting held on 23rd March 2011 was well attended by all stakeholders. It was agreed change was needed and saw an appetite to take plans forward.
Taking opportunity to shape the future and 21st century practitioner, the NSTG group will strive:
• To identify the training needs of those within the profession and ensuring that these are catered for.
• To establish a menu of existing training opportunities aimed at ensuring that practitioners have the opportunity to maintain and increase professionalism.
• To advise and guide employers and employees on the knowledge and skills required to undertake particular multi-disciplinary roles within the profession.
• To promote qualifications within the profession (including membership of IRSO).
• To assess all qualifications and training events to offer quality assurance for employers by providing the NSTG stamp / branding to signify that training providers have met NSTG’s minimum standards criteria.
Full details can be found in the Terms of Reference (Jan 2011) via the Knowledge Centre
Since NSTG’s inception there has been a growth in the number and variety of training opportunities offered to road safety practitioners. Although many are undoubtedly of good quality, providing valuable access to the development of professional knowledge and skills, few conferences / seminars / workshops / courses receive accreditation of any kind.
The meeting resulted in a four-point action plan. The findings will be reported once the survey and analysis has been completed at the next NSTG meeting (date TBC).
Membership and contacts
NSTG is an independent body which is chaired by the Institute of Road Safety Officers (IRSO) and strongly supported by Road Safety Great Britain (RSGB). IRSO and RSGB will undertake regular meetings, along with relevant active member organisations, usually via conference call to ensure delivery of the existing action plan.
Full meetings of the group will be organised on a half yearly basis.
In due course a central contact will be provided for information and correspondence. In the meantime communication should be via IRSO’s email address.
