The London Borough of Bromley Walking Bus Scheme
The Walking Bus is a scheme encouraging parents to walk their children to school along a set route. The children walk in a crocodile fashion with the 'driver' at the front and the 'conductor' at the rear, and the children are collected at 'bus stops' at specific times along the route, similar to a proper bus route. The London Borough of Bromley have created a CD-Rom designed to help Road Safety Units and parents set up their own walking buses. This CD-ROM is a multimedia interactive experience. It contains over 200 pages of text with commentary, 500 photographs, with some 2 hours of video clips and links to useful web sites, to assist parents, children and their teachers.
The Walking Bus Initiative is a key component of the London Borough of Bromley's transport strategy aimed at reducing congestion and improving mobility and access throughout the Borough. Safety is the key to this Bus, with the route being checked by the Walking Bus Co-ordinator, a Road Safety Officer, a Road Traffic Engineer and the Police.
Every volunteer is required to have a Police check, a sufficient volunteer-to-child ratio is followed and each volunteer wears an identification badge. Parents must sign a consent form, giving emergency details and every participant on the Walking Bus is required to wear a fluorescent yellow waistcoat sporting Bromley's Walking Bus logo - a must for every fashion guru!
We are delighted that Bromley's initiative will reach such a wide audience and be used to help educate and encourage other schools and individuals to start new Walking Bus routes. Hopefully, you will be seeing more Walking Buses marching their way to schools near you very soon.
