'Tyre safety month' focuses on tread depth

Tyre safety month (October ‘09) will focus on tread depth and encourage drivers to check and replace illegal tyres (RoadSafe News).

The campaign will use the theme of a ‘life saver in your pocket’ and will give motorists advice on how to check to see if their tyres may be illegal, by using a 20p coin.

Inserting a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of tyres gives a good indication of whether tyres have sufficient tread depth. The current law states that tyres must have a minimum of 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters of the tyre, around its whole circumference.

Drivers with tyres that fail to meet these standards face a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points per illegal tyre.
