SCP success in Dorset
Dorset County Council's management of its school crossing patrol (SCP) service reached new heights in 2008.
Last year the council managed 62 SCP sites across the county, which meant providing a safe crossing service on 23,790 occasions. On 99.9% of these occasions sites were staffed by a patrol or a relief patrol, thanks in part to an out-of-hours emergency phone service introduced to cover short-term, short-notice sickness and other emergency absence - despite a much higher than average SCP staff sickness and turnover record.
Robert Smith, network traffic safety manager, said: "It is testament to the efficient and professional management of the SCP service by the road safety team that the risks associated with short notice SCP absence across such a rural county are mitigated so effectively."
