Record month for newsfeed readership

2 readers have commented on this story

A record number of people accessed the Road Safety GB website and read the road safety newsfeed during October 2011.

During the course of the month, the website attracted 12,373 visits, beating the previous record of 12,149 in June 2011. Compared with October 2010, the number of visits has increased by 21% - and the number of visits has doubled in the past two years.

At 7,095, the number of individual visitors in October was also a record, beating the previous high of 6,616, again in June 2011, by 6%.

The most read article during the month, covering the Government’s intention to consult on raising the motorway speed limit from 70 to 80mph, attracted 656 visits.

Nick Rawlings, Road Safety GB newsfeed editor, said: “The newsfeed is now in its 10th year and it is very pleasing to see our audience still growing steadily year on year.

“Giving people the opportunity to post comments on news stories has undoubtedly increased its popularity, and we now regularly have passionate debates about important road safety issues.

“The investment that Road Safety GB has made over the past decade in providing a dynamic and high quality news service has clearly paid off. Road safety professionals in the UK and further afield seem to find the service useful and interesting – and that is very gratifying.”

Comment Well done Nick. This is a truly wonderful success story. We have all learned from the interchange of opinions and ideas that you have had the courage to publish. From the banal to the beneficial, from the controversial to the conciliatory, you have been forthright and robust in your editorial style that has been an advantage to everyone and we owe you a debt of gratitude. As I now take my leave of this forum, I am sure it will continue to flourish as a fountain of knowledge and wisdom to all its readers. Good luck in the future.
Roy Buchanan, Epsom
