Essex road deaths down

Fewer people were killed and injured on Essex roads in 2008 than the previous year. A total of 75 people were killed on the county's roads, a 9.6% fall on 2007.

There were also fewer injuries caused by road crashes. The total number of collisions in 2008 in which people were injured was 5,434, with 740 seriously injured. In 2007 there were 6,546 collisions, with 982 people seriously injured.

Chief inspector Tom Diment, said: "At first glance, the overall figures are encouraging and hopefully our road safety messages are hitting home."
