Road Safety GB and Colas form important alliance

In what is an exciting and important development for the UK’s road safety profession, Colas has agreed to sponsor the Road Safety Knowledge Centre (Knowledge Centre).
The Knowledge Centre, which launched in September 2010, has been developed by Road Safety GB with funding provided by the Department for Transport (DfT).
The Knowledge Centre is a comprehensive online library/directory of road safety information and resources. Access to the Knowledge Centre is free of charge and open to all.
Currently (1/3/11) there are 1,640 registered users and 353 member organisations. The corresponding figures in early October 2010 were 534 and 266 respectively, which indicates how in a short period of time the Knowledge Centre has grown into an important business tool for the UK’s road safety professionals.
In a recent survey of users, 98% of the 191 respondents rated the Knowledge Centre ‘Excellent’ or ‘Good’ in terms of potential usefulness. 64% rated it as ‘excellent’.
The sponsorship arrangement with Colas covers all of the Knowledge Centre running costs for a 12-month period commencing 1/4/11.
Colas operates throughout the UK as a service provider to the highways and airfields sectors. Colas provides a complete highway maintenance and construction service for local authorities and the Highways Agency. As part of the international Colas Group, it has access to the knowledge and resources of one of the world's leading road construction and maintenance organisations.
Alan Kennedy, chair of Road Safety GB, said: “This is wonderful news – we are delighted to form an alliance with Colas to further develop this important road safety project.
“While the Knowledge Centre is relatively new it is already being widely used as a reference tool by road safety professionals and we are sure that Colas will benefit through association with this prestigious resource.
“Colas also sponsored our annual conference in 2010 and it was very apparent there is synergy between our two organisations. Colas takes the safety of its employees extremely seriously and their support for this national project is further testament to their commitment to road safety on a wider scale.”
Lee Rushbrooke, Colas chief executive, voiced the company’s enthusiasm at expanding its involvement with Road Safety GB, saying: “I am delighted that Colas is able to continue and indeed enhance its support of its valued partners in the public sector through financing this valuable tool for their road safety professionals.
