100% sign up for safety scheme

Every Year 3 pupil in Richmond upon Thames has been signed up for road safety coaching to equip the ‘next generation’ with the tools to stay safe.

The council’s road safety education team is delighted at achieving 100% take up for the pedestrian training scheme, which will see all the youngsters complete the course by the end of the school year.

The scheme aims to reinforce the message of staying safe on the pavement and crossing the road carefully while walking to school. The training - practical teaching on roads around their school - also promotes the many benefits of walking.

Each child who completes the training, which comprises 30-minute sessions over three days, receives a blue enamel Richmond Safe Walking Scheme badge.

Sam Merison, principal safety education officer, said: “With every child having pedestrian and cycle training by the time they leave primary school, we are providing both a sustainable and safe future for them.”
