'Our Walk to School' returns to Liverpool

Liverpool’s road safety team has launched the latest phase of a project which targets year five students from high child casualty wards.

‘Our Walk to School’, which involves schools and the wider community, aims to raise children’s awareness of local road safety hazards to help them cope with traffic.

Students will undertake a 10-week awareness course focusing on their local area, during which they will carry out speed surveys and identify hazards, and work with a local media company to make a road safety film.

The project provides opportunities for the school to explore ways of improving road safety within their local community and offers a platform for governors, teachers and parents to address problems their students face first hand.

The campaign will run through to Christmas before rounding off with an Oscars-themed award ceremony in January 2011 to celebrate the students’ work.

Cllr Malcolm Kennedy, Liverpool City Council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Our Walk to School is playing an invaluable role in educating young people about the dangers of the road.

“By giving schoolchildren the chance to get involved in a range of practical and creative exercises which really make them think, the initiative is a great way of getting important road safety messages across.”
