Drink drive campaign seeks to inform young drivers

Mike McAdam, project manager for the ‘Don’t be that someone’ campaign, says the government is not doing enough to tackle the issue of drink driving.

Mr McAdam says that the total number of casualties from drink driving accidents is 11,990 a year - that’s roughly 33 per day, and just over 1 every hour.

‘Don’t Be That Someone’ aims to inform young people aged 14-18 years about the dangers and consequences of drink driving.

The campaign resource pack includes a documentary featuring the family and friends of a young man who was killed by a drink driver, a young woman who was seriously injured in a drink drive accident, a ‘vox pops’ video showing how little young people really know about the dangers of drink driving, three lesson plans that fit within the national curriculum, and interactive leaflets.

The pack also investigates issues including peer pressure, the responsibility of passengers and the after effects of causing serious injury or death, including the possible consequences for families and the wider community.

Congratulations Mike on tackling this important issue. Drink-driving remains a problem, with variable rates of enforcement, so relevant resources for schools and youth groups are sorely needed. I hope this resource is widely used.
