Daniel Beckett receives Laurie Bunn Award
Daniel Beckett, acting school travel team leader for the London Borough of Bromley, has won the Laurie Bunn Road Safety Award 2010* for outstanding road safety achievement in London.
The award goes to Daniel for the ‘Poetry in Motion’ initiative, which challenges school pupils to write poems about their walk to school, combining writing and language skills with road safety awareness.
The initiative proved extremely popular and was rolled out to 11 London boroughs, reaching almost 180,000 pupils in 600 schools.
The award was presented by TV presenter Nick Ross, president of the London Road Safety Council.
The judging panel was chaired by David Williams MBE, chief executive of GEM Motoring Assist, who described Poetry in Motion as ‘a truly staggering success’.

*Footnote: Laurie Bunn was a member of Barking and Dagenham Council for many years and actively involved in the LAPC. The Laurie Bunn Award was initiated in 2003 as a way of marking the outstanding contribution he made to LAPC and road safety in London, and a way of continuing his distinctive style of saying ‘well done’. The awards are presented to the winners during the LRSC Annual General Meeting.
