Alan KennedyChairman, Road Safety GB & Road Safety Section Manager, Durham County Council
Presentation: Road Safety GB update
Alan has been working in a road safety capacity for 23 years.
He began his career as a part time motorcycle instructor in South Tyneside. While on leave from his work in the North Sea oil industry, Alan trained as an instructor, became a Part 1 test examiner, and then commenced delivering cycle training in schools.
He worked his way up through the local authority road safety officer ranks and gained the Diploma and Accident and Safety Management in 1994.
He moved to Durham in 2000 to manage the county council's road safety section where he now employs a core of 16 full time staff and around 60 part time staff, to deliver a varied programme of road safety initiatives. These include driver improvement, speed awareness, SAGE for older drivers, young driver post test training, BikeWise advanced motorcycle training, work related road safety with local companies, Bikeability, child pedestrian training, a 220 strong School Crossing Patrol service, and a range of programmes in schools and colleges.
He has always been very much involved in road safety at a regional and national level. He chaired the north east regional group of Road Safety GB (then known as LARSOA) from 2001 until 2007 and became national Chairman in April 2009.
His other involvements are with the Road Safety GB web and communications team and he represents Road Safety GB at the DfT's Road Safety Delivery Board.
Alan's main ambition is to help make Road Safety GB the leader in road casualty reduction in the UK.
He is a keen musician, playing in a local pop/rock band. He also enjoys DIY. And when he has time, to keep fit and healthy, he loves cycling, especially riding his tandem. |
